The McLaren driver narrowly beat fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the fastest time in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the championship lead from Piastri by just one point after winning in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Melbourne-born driver by a mere 0.023s. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout due at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the championship fight, trailing with a 36-point deficit Norris, finished in 17th position as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he rotated at Turn Four soon after starting. Tsunoda lost control over the track edges before rotating through the escape zone, and was fortunate to avoid just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the high-speed Mergulho corner before the last turn on to the pit straight. The veteran finished practice in 19th place, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's car third fastest, 0.619secs slower than Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
