Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.
